Why a Custom Van Changes Everything

A recreational van isn't an RV. It's not a class B motorhome that rolled off an assembly line. It's a purpose-built vehicle designed around how you actually live, travel, and explore — from the electrical system that powers your remote work setup to the kitchen layout that fits how you cook, to the sleeping arrangement that works for your family or your solo adventure style.

At OZK Customs, we build recreational vans on three proven platforms — Ford Transit (2015+), Mercedes Sprinter (2019+), and Ram ProMaster (2022+). Every build starts with understanding how you use your van: where you travel, how long you stay, what systems matter most, and what compromises you won't accept. Then we engineer a package from our Fixed Pricing Menu that delivers exactly what you need.

We started as vanlifers ourselves — homeschooling our kids on the road, chasing sunsets, learning what actually works through thousands of miles and hundreds of nights. That experience is baked into every build. We know which products hold up, which configurations create problems six months down the road, and which systems genuinely make the difference between surviving in a van and thriving in one.

Build Options for Every Lifestyle

Not every van owner needs the same level of build. Some customers come to us ready for a complete turnkey conversion — electrical, plumbing, cabinetry, climate control, everything installed and tested before they drive away. Others already have a van with some work done and need us to handle the technical systems that require professional installation.

Both approaches produce excellent results because both are built on the same foundation: proven products from our Fixed Pricing Menu, installed by experienced technicians who understand the specific requirements of each platform.

Complete Custom Build

Turnkey van conversions with everything — electrical, plumbing, cabinetry, climate control, interior finishes, and all systems installed, tested, and ready for the road.

Partial Upfit

Professional installation of core systems — electrical, insulation, subfloor, climate, windows — so you have a solid technical foundation to build around.

Engineered Systems, Not Parts Lists

What Goes Into a Professional Van Build

Off-Grid Electrical

Lithium battery banks, solar panels sized for your actual usage, quality inverters, shore power integration, and alternator charging — all fused, documented, and wired to professional standards.

Climate & Comfort

Espar and Webasto heaters, AC systems, MaxxAir ventilation, aftermarket windows, and privacy covers — engineered as an integrated system, not a collection of random components.

Interior Build-Out

Cabinetry, sleeping platforms, kitchen galleys, wet and dry bath configurations, and storage systems — all designed for the way you actually live in a van, not how it looks in photos.

Platform-Specific Engineering

Every installation accounts for the specific mounting points, wiring routes, and structural characteristics of your Transit, Sprinter, or ProMaster. No generic solutions.

Build Your Dream Van

Every build starts with understanding how you travel. Tell us about your van, your destinations, and your lifestyle — and we'll engineer a build package that delivers exactly what you need.

The Build Process

01

Discovery Call

We discuss your travel style, van platform, must-have systems, and timeline. This conversation drives everything that follows.

02

We map your electrical, climate, interior, and storage systems against your platform. Every component is planned before work begins.

03

Professional Build

Documented installation of every system — electrical, climate, interior, exterior — with platform-specific procedures and quality checkpoints.

04

Testing & Handoff

Every system is tested through full operating cycles. You get a complete walkthrough of every component before you drive away.

Builds can be scoped as complete conversions or focused system installs — ask during your consultation.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

A custom van build takes a cargo van — like a Ford Transit, Mercedes Sprinter, or Ram ProMaster — and transforms it into a fully functional living space. Bed, kitchen, power system, climate control, storage — the works. Some owners want it for weekend trips, others live in theirs full-time. Every build we do is different because every owner's needs are different.

Ford Transit (2015+) is probably 60% of what we build — great parts availability, reliable, tons of aftermarket support. We also do Mercedes Sprinters (2019+) and Ram ProMasters (2022+). High roof, low roof, different wheelbases — we've worked on all of them. If you already own a van, bring it in. We work on existing vehicles, not just new ones.

It depends entirely on what you need. Partial upfits where we handle technical systems (electrical, insulation, subfloor) versus full builds with complete interiors — cabinetry, plumbing, climate, everything — are very different projects. We've done builds ranging from focused system installs to fully loaded expedition rigs. Tell us what you want to do with your van and we'll scope it for you.

If we're doing a partial upfit, you're looking at 2–4 weeks typically. Full builds take longer — usually 8–16 weeks depending on complexity. Custom cabinetry, intricate electrical setups, integrated climate systems — that work takes time to do right. We'll give you a realistic timeline upfront and keep you posted as we go.

Absolutely. A significant number of our customers do exactly that. We've designed builds for people who've been on the road for years. Large lithium battery banks, enough solar to run everything, 40–50 gallon water tanks, composting toilets that perform well, climate control for every season. Our builds are engineered for sustained, comfortable living — not just weekend camping.

This is where builds succeed or fail. We install proper off-grid electrical — lithium batteries (Battle Born, Victron, or Renogy depending on requirements), solar panels sized for your actual usage, quality inverters, shore power for when you're plugged in, alternator charging for when you're driving. Everything's fused and wired to code with documented circuits. No fire hazards, no guesswork.

Yes. We do wet baths where shower and toilet share a compact space, dry baths where they're separate, and outdoor shower setups for owners who want to keep things simple inside. We'll size your water tanks and gray water system based on how you actually plan to use it — daily showers versus occasional rinse-offs make a big difference in system design.

Fayetteville, Arkansas — right in the heart of the Ozarks. The XNA airport is about 20 minutes away, so a lot of out-of-state customers fly in, drop off their van, then come back when we're done. Northwest Arkansas has some of the best mountain biking in the country, world-class trails, and the Buffalo National River nearby. Worth extending your trip.

We started as vanlifers ourselves — traveling with our families, living on the road, learning what actually works and what doesn't through real experience. When people kept asking us to help with their builds, we made it official. Every build is genuinely custom (we don't do templates), we install brands we trust from our Fixed Pricing Menu, and our shop is surrounded by trails and rivers. You can literally test your van on dirt roads before you leave.
